Artist’s Statement
I am an artist who cares very much about making work that is both beautiful and meaningful. I am incredibly curious about the world and enjoy learning about as much as I can, but I specifically flourish in the academics of the art world. I love when artists connect their work to those of past great painters. Because of this tendency, art seems to be a means to bending time, allowing for us all to take part in a vast conversation that spans centuries and continents. Whether it is befriending local world-renown feminist artists or traveling to Florence, I collect all these experiences and use them as source material for my work.
The main goals of my work are varied, so I feel that there will always be various bodies of work coming from me. As a mother, I am compelled to paint that part of my life. My three children are beautiful and strange and wonderful — perfect source material for paintings. They are also the largest influence on who I am today. I have had to confront exactly who I am and what I want since becoming a mother and I know for certain that “artist” is at the core of my being. Additionally, I care very much about the place I live. Born and raised in the Central Valley of California, I am witness to the agricultural practices that bring wealth and employment to many in the valley, but also the effects of the water and land use that this vast industry has had. I feel compelled to use my art to help shed light on issues regarding water use in California, hopefully to add valuable insight to the ongoing struggle for balance between ecology and agriculture.
Graduating from Fresno State with a BA in Studio Art in 2023 at age 41, I am ready to hit the ground running. I am delighted to have the time to paint as my career and look forward to working with galleries and museums to share my art with a broad community.
